The Short Answer

BPMobile’s Secret Photo Album has a decoy PIN and a 4.6 rating, but it never says how its “encrypted” storage works, and its privacy policy says Premium subscribers’ files may be stored with Amazon Web Services. The same policy lists ad and analytics services, and its App Store privacy label lists purchases, location and identifiers among data used to track you. HypaVault encrypts every file on the phone with AES-256-GCM, works without an account, carries no advertising, and has a duress passcode that erases your real vaults instead of only hiding them. For photos you can’t afford to have seen, HypaVault is the stronger choice.

  • HypaVault encrypts every file on your phone with AES-256-GCM, while Secret Photo Album promises “encrypted” storage without saying how.
  • Secret Photo Album’s Premium cloud needs a registered email and may keep files with Amazon Web Services; HypaVault keeps your vault on the phone with no sign-up.
  • Its decoy PIN only hides your real photos, while HypaVault’s duress passcode opens an empty vault and erases the rest.

Where They Really Differ

Encryption, in Reality

Secret Photo Album

BPMobile says Secret Photo Album keeps files in “encrypted, PIN-protected storage” and offers “encrypted cloud storage,” but it names no algorithm and publishes no key-handling detail or audit. From public sources, it can’t be confirmed whether files are encrypted on the phone or only hidden behind the PIN. We found no independent security research on the app.

HypaVault

Every file, name, folder, note and thumbnail is encrypted on the phone with AES-256-GCM before it's saved, each file with its own random 256-bit key. A copy of the files is unreadable without your passcode and the phone's own device key.

Account Dependency

Secret Photo Album

Public sources suggest the album works without signing up, though we couldn’t confirm the first-launch flow. Cloud sync, and restoring after a lost or broken phone, need an email registered in Settings, and the privacy policy also supports Sign in with Apple. For paid subscribers, the policy says files may be stored with Amazon Web Services.

HypaVault

Setup is a 6-digit passcode and a 12-word recovery phrase. You never give HypaVault an email or a phone number, so there's no login to phish and your vault never depends on a company sign-in.

Ads and Data

Secret Photo Album

The App Store listing carries no advertising label, and we found no recent reviews about in-app ads. Even so, the privacy policy lists ad-related services, including Google Mobile Ads, Appodeal, Facebook and Firebase, and describes interest-based advertising. Its self-reported App Store label lists purchases, location, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics as data used to track you, and photos or videos among data linked to you.

HypaVault

HypaVault is paid for by people who choose Pro, never by advertising. Its only outside service is RevenueCat, which records purchases and never sees your vaults.

Protection Under Pressure

Secret Photo Album

A decoy PIN hides the real photos and videos, and break-in alerts send security reports with photos of intruders. Nothing in the App Store listing, product page or terms describes a passcode that erases data, so under pressure the real files are hidden, not erased.

HypaVault

A second passcode for when you're forced to unlock. It looks like a normal unlock and opens an empty vault, while every other vault on the phone is erased in one silent step. Your backups bring them back later.

Once they’re safely in HypaVault, delete the originals if you want them kept only there.

  8. We couldn’t find a documented way to recover a forgotten PIN in Secret Photo Album’s listing, and reviewers report being locked out and waiting weeks for replies from support.
