The Short Answer

PV Secret Photo Album is well rated and offers a fake password, a calculator theme and a pay-once option, but it’s ad-supported and says little about how its encryption works. Its own FAQ says the “Forget passcode” button emails your password to a recovery address, and its privacy policy says personal information may be collected, used and stored in China. HypaVault encrypts every file on the phone with AES-256-GCM, carries no advertising, never asks for an email, and backs each vault up as an encrypted file you keep. Its duress passcode erases your real vaults instead of only hiding them.

  • PV Secret Photo Album is ad-supported and names only “AES,” while HypaVault is ad-free and encrypts every file with AES-256-GCM.
  • PV’s own FAQ says “Forget passcode” emails your password to a recovery address; HypaVault uses a 12-word recovery phrase that’s shown once and never stored.
  • PV’s fake password only hides the real albums, while HypaVault’s duress passcode opens an empty vault and erases the rest.

Where They Really Differ

Encryption, in Reality

PV Secret Photo Album

PV’s Google Play listing says it encrypts photos and videos with “military-grade AES,” while its iOS listing mentions only “data encryption.” Neither gives a key length, mode or how keys are handled, and we found no independent analysis of the app. Some reviewers report that backups uploaded to third-party clouds weren’t encrypted.

HypaVault

Every file, name, folder, note and thumbnail is encrypted on the phone with AES-256-GCM before it's saved, each file with its own random 256-bit key. A copy of the files is unreadable without your passcode and the phone's own device key.

Account Dependency

PV Secret Photo Album

PV doesn’t describe a sign-up for basic use, but its FAQ asks you to set a recovery email, and its paid cloud backup is restored by logging in to your account. The privacy policy, issued by Shanghai Cuntu Technology Co., Ltd., says it collects your email when you create an account and that personal information may be collected, used and stored in China.

HypaVault

Setup is a 6-digit passcode and a 12-word recovery phrase. You never give HypaVault an email or a phone number, so there's no login to phish and your vault never depends on a company sign-in.

Ads and Data

PV Secret Photo Album

The free version shows ads: the App Store lists “Contains: Advertising,” Google Play lists “Contains ads,” and the privacy policy names AdMob as its ad SDK. Its self-reported App Store label lists identifiers and usage data as data used to track you, with third-party advertising among the purposes. The policy also names the umeng SDK on iOS, which it says collects identifiers such as the IDFA, plus location.

HypaVault

HypaVault is paid for by people who choose Pro, never by advertising. Its only outside service is RevenueCat, which records purchases and never sees your vaults.

Protection Under Pressure

PV Secret Photo Album

A fake password opens a second album space with normal-looking content and hides the real albums, and an Emergency Switch jumps to another app when you turn the phone face down. Neither store listing nor the FAQ describes a passcode that erases data, so under pressure the real albums are hidden, not erased.

HypaVault

A second passcode for when you're forced to unlock. It looks like a normal unlock and opens an empty vault, while every other vault on the phone is erased in one silent step. Your backups bring them back later.

  8. PV’s own FAQ says tapping “Forget passcode” emails your password to the recovery email you set, so your passcode ends up in that inbox.
